[29 Oct 05] *** Desperate Housewives
premiered Sunday, September 25th, with Richard aboard as a Series Regular
for Fall 2005 *** -- Richard Burgi returns to Desperate Housewives
as a Series Regular for the hit show's second season. The series went back
into production in late July, picking up where the previous season finale
left off.
Richard plays
Karl Mayer, Susan (Teri Hatcher) Mayer's
cad of an ex-husband on
ABC's award-winning hit series. Previously
seen in "Pretty Little Picture" and "Move On," Karl was back to bedevil
his ex in "One Wonderful Day," the highly-anticipated season finale.
As had been hinted at by Nicollette Sheridan (whose neighborhood
vixen Edie Britt has been Susan's nemesis), Karl becomes romantically
involved with Edie in Season Two. The legitimacy of Edie or Karl's affection
for the other is, of course, open for debate, as Edie may be motivated
by a desire to get back at Susan by romancing someone "near and dear to
Susan's heart." Karl himself may be motivated by a desire to make
Susan jealous, which may lead to some competitive behavior between Karl
and Mike (Jamie Denton) Delfino -- who Karl disparagingly calls
"the Plumber."
Thus far Richard has appeared in the second and third episodes of the
Fall 2005 season ("You Could Drive a Person Crazy" and "You'll Never Get
Away From Me,") and is slated to appear next in the seventh episode, "Have
It Your Way."
Karl is coming across as a more sympathetic character this season, and
he and Edie are looking more and more like the most "normal" and straightforward
residents of Wisteria Lane -- though considering the neighbors they're
being compared to...
To learn more about the show, visit the "Desperate
Housewives" page at the ABC website, which has been updated for Fall
2005.

[29 Oct 05] *** Richard Burgi's
Karl Mayer featured in new Desperate Housewives book *** -- "Desperate
Housewives: Behind Closed Doors" is the new softback "coffee table
book" companion to the First Season DVD set.
In addition to delving into the lives of the Housewives, "Behind Closed
Doors" also looks at their families and Significant Others, current and
previous. Richard's Karl Mayer get half of Page 85 in a layout
which includes some of the photos seen in the Mayer family scrapbook (these
ones with his head still attached).
The layout also includes commentary by Marc Cherry on Richard's
casting as Karl:
"Karl was a little hard to cast, because we wanted a guy that was
nice looking and seemed like he would have been married to Teri, but also
someone you wouldn't like. When Richard Burgi came in we thought he was
just terrific. Another actor played Karl in the pilot but the conception
of the part changed a little bit, and we just felt at the end of the day,
we needed something a little different."
The book is available at traditional retail stores and through online
retailers like Amazon.com.
(Thanks to Maureen for the heads up, to Helen for availability info,
and to Ruth for the page scan). |
[29 Oct 05] *** Desperate
Housewives Update *** -- Thus far, we have confirmed that Richard appears
in the second, third, and seventh episodes of the new season. As
always, we advise viewers to watch
every Sunday to catch any mentions
of or appearances by caddish Karl.
 |
[29 Oct 05] *** Desperate Housewives
Complete First Season now available on DVD *** -- The eagerly-awaited
DVD set of the hit show's first season is now available through both online
retailers and more traditional outlets, and thus far the six-disc set is
meeting with reviewer approval.
Richard Burgi plays Karl Mayer, Susan (Teri Hatcher) Mayer's
rather... unevolved and caddish ex-husband in the third, eleventh, and
twenty-third episodes of the season -- "Pretty Little Picture," "Move On,"
and the season finale, "One Wonderful Day."
Richard also features in series creator Marc Cherry's "favorite
episodes" commentary on "One Wonderful Day." The Boston Herald's Mark
A. Perigard's review had this to say:
"Creator Marc Cherry shares insights into his favorite episodes in
several commentaries, including the tidbit that Nicollette Sheridan's appearance
in the pilot was a one-shot deal. Sheridan demonstrated so much chemistry
with co-star Teri Hatcher that she vamped herself into a full-time job.
Also listen to his comments regarding Richard Burgi, who plays Hatcher's
ex-husband, and you'll understand why the actor has been upgraded to series
regular."
Interested in buying the first season of Desperate Housewives on
DVD? Desperate Housewives - The Complete First Season is now available
for purchase at local retailers and through online companies such as Amazon.com.
Currently the discounted price at Amazon is $38.99. (For reference purposes,
the ASIN number for the DVD set is B00079FUI6).

[29 Oct 05] *** TV Guide features
Richard in October 24th issue's "Insider" feature *** -- The October
24th issue of TV Guide features Richard in their Insider interview, conducted
by Ileane Rudolph. The article starts with Desperate Housewives
and walks back through Richard's career, touching on "In Her Shoes," Judging
Amy, 24, Action, The Sentinel, and Another World. Richard gives interesting
and insightful commentary on several key characters.
"I look at Karl as someone who's really trying to live in a place
of forgiveness -- like the Dalai Lama," Richard says of his Desperate
Housewives character. "There's a tender side to him. He really likes
Edie, but he got to tell his ex-wife that he 'never loved another woman
the way I loved you.' You get a sense of his humanity -- even through he's
a profligate screwup." His Action character, Cole Riccardi,
"...was
all smoke and mirrors -- very insecure. He was hilarious, one of my favorite
characters."
Says Richard of The Sentinel, "I loved the concept -- and
the duration of it. I tried to inhabit a guy who had a blessing and a curse.
He had a wry sense of humor. He was a cynic, sarcastic, heroic, terrified,
conflicted. [Laughs] A lot like me."

[29 Oct 05] *** US Weekly features
Desperate Housewives in the October 24th issue *** -- The October 24th
issue of US Weekly features a double page spread article (pages 60-61)
on Desperate Housewives, and one of the "hot topics" discussed is Karl
and Edie.
"Will Karl and Edie Stay Together?" asks the headline, and the theme
is discussed in some detail.
There's more domestic drama ahead for Susan, as Edie (Nicollette
Sheridan, 41) grows closer to Susan's ex-husband, Karl (new series regular
Richard Burgi, 47, inset). "Expect great Edie-Susan catfights," a producer
has said. And as Susan's daughter, Julie (Andrea Bowen, 15), spends more
time at the Britt abode (inside scoop: Edie's 6-year-old son finally appears
in an upcoming episode!), Susan "will have to breathe a little deeper to
access those layers of patience, understanding and forgiveness," Burgi
has said.
The caption emblazoned across Nicollette's camisole raises another intriguing
question -- "Will Sheridan and Burgi walk down the aisle?" (Karl's
comment in "You'll Never Get Away from Me" that Edie could be family one
day certainly throws fuel on that particular smoldering fire).

[29 Oct 05] *** Desperate Housewives
holds an open house and press conference for foreign-market press***
-- The Fall 2005 cast of Desperate Housewives gathered at Universal Studios
in early September to host a press conference and open house for reporters
from the show's international markets. Reporters met with the cast in small
rotating groups for round-robin interviews and were also treated to a tour
of Wisteria Lane itself.
Ruben V. Nepales of the Inquirer News Service and www.inq7.net
website described his day with the denizens of Wisteria Lane in a piece
entitled "A whole day with the famous 'desperadas' of Wisteria Lane."
While Nepales' focus was understandably on the aforementioned desperadas,
he did chat with Richard:
"Richard Burgi (Karl Mayer), dapper in a summer suit complete with
a white hankie on his breast pocket, was surprised to hear that we had
already seen his forthcoming movie, 'In Her Shoes.'"
At the completion of the interview sessions, the journalists were treated
to a tram-ride out to the Wisteria Lane exterior sets and a tour of the
houses themselves, some of which are more furnished and trimmed out than
others.

[29 Oct 05] *** People
Magazine publishes Desperate Housewives special edition, and Richard's
featured in it *** -- People Magazine has issued a special edition
titled "Secrets of Desperate Housewives." The issue was slated to be
on newsstands through October 24th; buy now, or forever hold your peace.
Richard Burgi, who joins the show as a series regular this season,
plays Susan (Teri Hatcher) Mayer's ex-husband Karl and is featured
in the magazine's section on "Husbands, Hunks, & Cads," which is excerpted
below.
The Slimy Ex-Husband
RICHARD BURGI
(Karl Mayer)
He appeared in only three episodes last year as Susan's adulterous husband,
dropping by to twist the knife in her already-broken heart. This season,
expect to see a lot more of Burgi as Karl takes up with Susan's nemesis
Edie— and remains as cluelessly Neanderthal as ever. "He realizes he's
a bit of a buffoon," he says, "but yet goes through life blindly
anyway and having a good time. I think they're getting a new car for me
that is just as racy and just as screaming-a-midlife-crisis as before."
Burgi, 47, married for 10 years to Lori Kahn with sons Jack, 8, and
Samuel, 5, has his own secret for avoiding those pitfalls. "Find some
support system," he says. "I'm a big proponent of therapy — group
therapy, single therapy — to get a sense of the big picture."
As for any steamy encounters with Edie, Burgi says he's ready for the
extra exposure. "A little buttage?" he says, laughing. "If if
s for the sake of the scene, sure, I've got buns in the oven. They just
need to be taken out and cooled down."

and article excerpt) |

[29 Sep 05] ***
Richard Burgi featured in Austria's Kurier daily *** -- The September
4th issue of the Kurier, Austria's second-largest daily newspaper, featured
a special weekend edition of the Kult insert -- a Desperate Housewives-themed
issue centering on an interview with Richard Burgi, "The man who drives
housewives to desperation."
"Fun guy Richard Burgi obviously has a lot of fun with his role
as infidel husband and general pig Karl," says the Kurier's Ingrid Gabriel,
"and audiences loved him so much that after being a guest during the first
season, he becomes a regular of the hit show during second season. - We
still remember fondly his fast departure, leaving Susan towel-less, or
his flirting with single Edie. He does admit to Teri Hatcher's words in
a TV interview: 'He's awesome! I have never seen a guest star make a
crew laugh more than him.' Yes, people on set were incredibly great,
and the long hours were always 'hardest on the crew. We're in the entertainment
business, so let's entertain.' He's not allowed to spill much
on the development of the series. Just a bit in advance: there's a new
house with a piano-teacher and her son, and he himself has a 'love/war,
love/war thing ' with Ex-wife Susan. 'But there's also a flame of
interest flickering between me and Edie...' he adds mischievously.
And with Mike Delfino whom, according to the script he's only to call 'the
Plumber,' there's going to be competition too. 'Hey, it's like two dogs
marking their territory, it's only understandable.'"
The article is available online at the Kurier's website:

[29 Sep 05] *** Richard featured
in July 17 - 23 2005 issue of Switzerland's Teletop magazine *** --
Further evidence of the high regard European TV viewers have for Richard
is Issue 29 of Teletop, a magazine devoted to television actors, series,
and TV movies.
Richard's interview is featured in an article by Henry Arnaud titled
"Burgi on the wave." Richard has been interviewed a number of times by
Arnaud, and the tone of the interview is very laid back and comfortable.
The majority of the pictures are by photographer Gilles Toucas, who has
also worked with Richard on previous occasions.
The interview was conducted shortly before Richard departed with his
family for Shanghai, China, where he worked on "Shanghai Red" from mid-June
into late July. At the time, Richard was enjoying his summer vacation,
spending much of the day on and around the beach with his family and engaging
in one of his passions -- surfing -- whenever possible. "For me, the summer
holidays are the beach and surfing!" said Richard.
According to Richard, a typical day of summer vacation consists of waking
up with the tides to catch the morning's first waves, spending the morning
with his family, eating lunch at one of the small restaurants along the
beach, and catching one more round of surfing in the afternoon.
A self-described "surfing enthusiast," Richard shared a favorite surfing
spot with Teletop -- Crystal Cove. His wife Lori, who Richard described
as a "true home fairy," found their home overlooking the ocean and moved
them into what Richard calls "our corner of Paradise."
As Richard's Swiss heritage makes him something of a 'hometown boy'
for Teletop readers, he chatted with Arnaud about that heritage. "My grandfather
was Swiss, and I still have cousins in Lucerne," he said. He also talked
about being eager to visit Switzerland again, though the logistics were
considerably more complex with a family.

[29 Oct 05] *** "In Her Shoes"
premieres in Los Angeles at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
*** -- The Hollywood premiere and attendant red carpet affair for "In
Her Shoes" took place on Wednesday, September 28th. Attending the event
were Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine, Mark Feuerstein,
Richard Burgi, and Director Curtis Hanson.
Richard plays Jim Danvers in the film version of Jennifer
Weiner's best-seller novel. "In Her Shoes" premiered nation-wide on
October 7th and will soon be premiering in international markets.
About.com has a streaming video interview snippet available at
their site which includes a short "soundbite" from Richard.
"They're extremely powerful women," he says of the film's leading
ladies, "really fun, committed to their craft, a lot of fun to work
with, and quite easy on the eyes."

[29 Oct 05] *** OK!
Magazine features "In Her Shoes" L.A. premiere in October 17th issue ***
-- The Hollywood premiere and attendant red carpet affair for "In Her Shoes"
took place on Wednesday, September 28th, and OK! Magazine was there to
chronicle the event. The article body text reads as follows:
If Cinderella's prince came calling to these two sisters, he would
have found two that fit the slipper -- but the similarities stop there.
Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette play siblings in the comedy In Her Shoes.
At the L.A. premiere, the red carpet buzzed that this is Cameron's best
performance to date. Cameron and Toni looked like the best of friends,
both wearing Jimmy Choos! Toni told OK! "It was my dream job, pretty much
the best job I've ever had."

[29 Oct 05] *** "In Her
Shoes" now starting fourth week in Domestic theaters *** -- The
October
7th premiere of "In Her Shoes" is now three weeks behind us, and the
slate of International premieres will soon start rolling.
The film's world premiere occurred at the Toronto International Film
Festival (Sept 8 - 17), where "In Her Shoes" was warmly received by
audiences and reviewers. Paul Fischer of Moviehole.net
described the film as "...one of the most satisfying and exquisite comic
gems of the year..."
In addition to the original domestic trailer, a longer international
trailer is available online in a variety of formats. The original QuickTime
trailer is available at the Apple
website, as well as the official movie website at www.inhershoes.com
while the longer international trailer can be found at http://www.femalefirst.co.uk
in a variety of formats and sizes. Richard is featured
in the trailer in scenes with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette.
Jim Danvers (Richard) knocks on the door of girlfriend Rose's (Collette)
apartment, only to be met by her sister Maggie (Diaz). Jim, easy prey to
temptation, is unable to resist the charms of the half-dressed Maggie.
In the week leading up to the movie's premiere, Diaz appeared on a broad
spectrum of shows to promote the film, visiting with Katie Couric
on NBC's Today Show and with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central's
The Daily Show. Diaz presented the same new clip on both shows, one
focusing on Jim's early-morning encounter with Maggie at the bathroom door.
Jim's state of undress -- he appears in his boxers -- led Jon Stewart to
jokingly accuse the film of trotting out "gratuitous man meat!"
"In Her Shoes" stars Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley
MacLaine. Richard plays
Jim Danvers, Rose's (Collette) cheating
boyfriend. According to the character breakdown, Danvers is "a handsome,
suave attorney at the law firm of Lewis, Dommel and Fenick. He's also a
cold-hearted ladies man who dumps women without thinking twice."
Based on the Jennifer Weiner book of the same title, "In Her
Shoes" was screenwritten by Susannah Grant and is directed by Curtis
Hanson.

[29 Oct 05] ***
"Fun with Dick and Jane" dives back into production on reshoots and new
scenes *** -- As detailed on the Dark Horizons website, the cast and
crew of "Fun with Dick and Jane" went back to work in September reshooting
40 - 60 pages of rewritten and new scenes. All told, the reshoots were
expected to take five weeks to complete.
Apparently the additional scenes and reworking were requested to allow
for more of "Carrey doing his normal schtick." Richard
was called back for roughly a week's work on rewritten or new scenes, so
presumably his character, Joe, and Carrey's Dick Harper will
be playing "keeping up with the Joneses" to a much greater, and wackier,
degree.
Trailers for "Fun with Dick and Jane" are now playing in cinemas
across the country and at various online sources. Richard appears in two
scenes of the original trailer as the Harper's next door neighbor, Joe,
and in a shorter version of the "red shirt" scene in the newer, office-based
trailer.
The trailer is available at the following online locations:
The official site: http://www.funwithdickandjane.com/
The Apple QuickTime Trailers site: http://www.apple.com/trailers/
Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni headline this update of the 1977
original, which starred Jane Fonda and George Segal. Carrey
and Leoni play Dick and Jane Harper, a couple who find themselves
on the verge of financial collapse when Dick loses his job. The Harpers
turn to a life of crime to pay the bills, apparently preying on their wealthy
neighbors and friends. (Richard plays their next-door neighbor Joe).
The production began principal photography in and around Los Angeles
in early September '04, filming for 114 days before wrapping in early
2005.

the online sleuthing) |

[29 Oct 05] *** Richard back
home after completing work in Shanghai on "Shanghai Red"*** -- Richard
returned from Shanghai, China, in late July after "wrapping out" -- completing
-- his nearly six-week shoot on "Shanghai Red," a feature film from
MAR
de ORO Films and Shanghai Film Studios. The film recently completed
its last day of principal photography and is now in post-production.
Written, directed, and produced by Oscar Luis Costo, the film
stars Vivian Wu ("Pillowbook," "A Bright Shining Lie," "8 1/2 Women,"
"The Joy Luck Club") as Meili Zhu and Richard Burgi as Michael Johnson.
They are joined by Ge You ("Farewell My Concubine," "To Live," "A
World Without Thieves"), Roger Yuan ("Shanghai Noon," "Vanishing
Son," "Bulletproof Monk"), and Sun Honglei ("Zhou Yu's Train").
Writer and director Oscar Costo graciously shared a description
of "Shanghai Red" with us:
"'Shanghai Red' is a dramatic film about the journey of a young,
modern Shanghai mother Meili Zhu (Vivian Wu) who suffers the loss of her
husband and how she comes to terms with her state of depression. In her
murderous journey of revenge, Meili meets Michael Johnson (Richard Burgi),
an expatriate American from Chicago escaping his own dark past. Even though
Michael's motives for being with Meili are originally laced with deception,
he ultimately finds hope, love and honor through her."
(Thanks to Jude for the initial heads up, to Richard for confirmation,
to Oscar Costo for the terrific intro to the story and characters, and

[29 Oct 05] *** Richard's episode
of short-lived ABC series Eyes airs "down under" *** -- Richard's character
in the smart and snappy ABC series Eyes was intended as a recurring role.
Unfortunately, ABC unceremoniously yanked the show off the schedule with
roughly half of its episodes unaired, and Richard's was one of these lost
episodes.
Fortunately, the show found its way to New Zealand, where Richard's
episode premiered in syndication on October 3rd. "Art," the 11th
episode of the series, introduced Richard as FBI Special Agent Matthew
Hale.
Richard's Hale and Tim Daly's Harlan Judd butt heads from the
get-go as they attempt to recover three stolen Van Gogh paintings. Their
differing approaches clash, leading to the destruction of one of the paintings.
Judd's wiles and finesse save the day, winning out over Hale's more blunt-force
approach, and the remaining two Van Goghs are recovered safely.

John de Lancie and "Stargate: Atlantis"' David Hewlett also
star in Darklight. Principal photography began on July 28th and wrapped
the week of August 18th.
The Sci Fi Channel's listing for Darklight gave this description:
"A secret society fights evil with evil in this atmospheric original
thriller.
Shiri Appleby (TV's Roswell), Richard Burgi (The Sentinel, SCI FI
Pictures' Decoys), John de Lancie (Q from the Star Trek franchise) and
David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis, SCi FI Pictures' Boa vs. Python, the
indie hit Cube) star in this tale of an ancient demoness named Lilith,
who has been captured by a secret society known as The Faith.
Her true nature concealed by a powerful spell, Lilith lives as a
24-year-old woman with no memory of her ageless past -- until William Shaw
(Burgi) of The Faith recruits her to help him stop the Demonicos, a rampaging
monster that is spreading a lethal plague across the Earth and whose only
vulnerability is to Lilith's unique mystical power, known as Darklight.
As the duo race to slay the creature, they unwittingly expose a treacherous
conspiracy within The Faith itself. Lilith has the power to set things
right -- but now she has been reawakened to her true nature, will she resume
her own evil ways? Trusting her is a life-or-death gamble for humanity,
but it's one that William Shaw has no choice but to take." |

[29 Oct 05] *** The Sentinel
now airing in original, uncut form on Canada's SPACE: The Imagination
Station ***-- SPACE launched The Sentinel on Tuesday, September
6th at 10:00pm ET with the episode repeating the following morning
at 10:00am.
According to SPACE's Director of Programming and Acquisitions, Isme
Bennie, fan requests seem to have played a part SPACE's decision to add
The Sentinel to their Fall 2005 lineup. "SPACE continues to bring our viewers
what they have asked for," said Bennie. "This will be an amazing season..."
Bennie's "Sentinel" announcement was made at the Toronto Trek 19 convention.
Richard Burgi plays series lead Jim Ellison, a former
Army Ranger now working as a detective for the Cascade PD in his Washington
State hometown. Ellison finds himself almost overwhelmed when his dormant,
and repressed, hyperactive senses are brought back online after a period
of solitude on a remote stakeout. Anthropology doctoral candidate Blair
Sandburg (Garett Maggart), whose chosen field of research is "Sentinels"
-- people with such enhanced senses -- has the answers Ellison needs to
control and work with his powerful and unpredictable abilities. Ellison's
long-suffering captain, Simon Banks (Bruce A. Young) helps Ellison
and Sandburg make the most of Ellison's sensory advantage by watching their
backs and keeping their extrasensory escapades under the radar as much
as possible.

[29 Oct 05] *** Firefly leads
the Sci Fi Channel's Friday night lineup, airing at 7:00pm ET -- catch
Richard in "the Message" *** -- The Sci Fi Channel has secured
rerun rights to all fifteen episodes of Firefly,
Joss Whedon's
short-lived
"Western in space," and has incorporated the show into its Friday night
lineup, where it serves as the lead-in to Sci Fi's popular
Stargate:
SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica.
Visit the Sci Fi Channel's Firefly page at: http://www.scifi.com/firefly/index.html
Richard Burgi appears as Lt. Womack in "The Message,"
the shows' 13th episode. Written by executive producers Joss Whedon
and Tim Minear, and filmed in mid-December 2002, "The Message" was
one of the last of 14 episodes (15 with the pilot split in half) ordered
by FOX, and the last episode filmed. According to a brief description of
the episode, "the crew must deliver the corpse of an old war comrade
home, but things are not as they seem."
The script had this to say of Alliance Enforcement officer Womack: "He's
been around the block, and likely beaten up everybody on it."
Womack was intended to be a recurring character -- a shady lawman who would
undoubtedly cross paths with the Serenity at the most inconvenient times.

for the screengrabs) |

[29 Oct 05] *** Richard's episodes
of "The District" airing in repeats on the USA Network*** --
With CBS having dropped "The District" from the Fall 2004
schedule, the USA Network has picked the show up for syndicated
broadcast.
USA is currently airing the show on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday at either 11:00am or 11:30am ET, depending on the day of the
week. Remember to check your local listings or the USA Network site for
additional information:
http://www.usanetwork.com/series/thedistrict/
The show is also airing in syndication in Singapore, where at last report
Season 4 was being broadcast. Assuming the broadcast cycle has started
over with Season 1, viewers are enjoying Richard's heaviest season -- seven
episodes.
A complete listing of Richard's episodes of "The District" can
be found on the Filmography page,
with an expanded listing and episode details on the District
Guide page.
Richard appeared in three of the show's four seasons in a total
of twelve episodes, playing the recurring role of the prickly and suspicious
Captain
Vincent Hunter, head of the DC Police Department's Internal Affairs
Division.
Unfortunately, the show did not take maximum advantage of the Hunter
character, though they established an intriguing back-story for him in
the first season episode "The DC Strangler." Ella Farmer (played by
the late Lynn Thigpen) told Chief Mannion (Craig T. Nelson)
a bit about Hunter. He was a highly-decorated officer with a relatively
high solve rate while in Homicide, a department he left after discovering
his wife -- also a police officer -- in bed with his partner..

info, to Becky and Erin for the District screengrabs, and to the Epguides
website for production details) |
