[18 Sep 04] *** Richard
joins cast of new Jim Carrey comedy Fun with Dick and Jane *** -- Jim
Carrey and Tea Leoni headline this update of the 1977 original,
which starred Jane Fonda and George Segal. Carrey and Leoni
play Dick and Jane Harper, a couple who find themselves on the verge
of financial collapse when Dick loses his job. The Harpers turn to a life
of crime to pay the bills, apparently preying on their wealthy neighbors
and friends.
Angie Harmon joins the production in the role of Veronica.
Richard, who will be working on the film for five weeks, plays neighbor
Joe Kleman (spelling uncertain).
The production began principal photography in Los Angeles in early
September, with outdoor "neighborhood" location work taking place on the
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA shoreline.
At present, 24 June 2005 is being given as the US premiere date for
Fun with Dick and Jane.

[18 Sep 04] *** "Point Pleasant"
gets 12-episode order from FOX; will likely premiere in 2005 *** --
Though not initially selected for the Fall 2004 FOX season, "Point Pleasant"
will soon go into production as a mid-season replacement. FOX has
greenlighted a 12-episode order and has renewed cast contracts, including
Richard's. The show will most likely premiere in early 2005.
The foxnow.com website
appears to have updated their information on "Point Pleasant." New -- to
us, at least -- is a show logo, a different version of the cast photo (both
at left), and a more detailed -- and tantalizing -- description of the
show.
"The quiet beach community of POINT PLEASANT is about to get much
louder when a sudden, violent storm washes in more than the tide. Local
lifeguard Jesse spies Christina [Elisabeth Harnois] floating in the sea
and immediately dives in to save her life. He takes her to the home of
Dr. Ben Kramer [Richard Burgi], whose daughter Judy and wife Meg take an
immediate liking to Christina. For Christina, Point Pleasant offers both
respite from her protected boarding-school existence in New York, and the
opportunity to search for her mother, Ann - who, surprisingly, grew up
in the area but has never been a part of Christina's life. Aside from the
Kramers' fondness for her, and Jesse's budding attraction, it seems that
secret desires, repressed feelings and heightened emotions inexplicably
begin to flare when Christina is near. Christina never knew her mother,
and doesn't realize that she's never truly known her father, either. Christina
is the offspring of a mortal woman and the Devil - and although she doesn't
know it, the battle for her soul has begun."
Richard spent part of March 2004 working on the pilot. Described
as "a cross between
'Peyton Place' and The Omen," as well
as "a gentler Rosemary's Baby on the Jersey shore," the supernatural
series focuses on a mysterious girl (Christina, played by
Elisabeth
Harnois), who washes ashore one day after a shipwreck.
Cast breakdowns give the following description of Ben: "A local
physician who shares his seaside home with his wife and daughter, he feels
uneasy about the young girl whom he's taken into his home. But, after seeing
the growing bond his wife and daughter have with Christina, Ben decides
not to push the matter - not just yet anyway. The role is listed in his
late 40s and the doctor is described as intelligent and confident."

[18 Sep 04] *** Cellular opens in
theaters, earns good ratings from reviewers and "two thumbs up" from Ebert
and Roeper *** -- If you've been eager to see Richard Burgi on the
Big Screen, the time has come. The New Line Cinema thriller premiered on
September 10th and was met with good ratings and reviews.
Roger Ebert, writing for the Sun
Times, gave Cellular 3 1/2 stars and called it "...one of
the year's best thrillers." Ebert also said of the film:
"The movie is skillfully plotted, halfway plausible and well acted;
the craftsmanship is in the details, including the astonishing number of
different ways in which a cell phone can be made to function -- both as
a telephone, and as a plot device."
**Cellular meets opening weekend box-office projections** --
Cellular took in some $10.2 million during its first weekend in theaters,
which puts it on target for industry projections.
** Latest revision of Cellular site features image and audio files
of Richard as Craig Martin ** -- The Cellular website has been upgraded
considerably with Macromedia Flash features -- images, sound files, and
actor biographies, to name a few.
The site is navigated by use of a satellite image of the Los Angeles
Metro area. Hotspots are marked with red and white triangles, and these
correspond to key locations in the movie -- the Martin's Brentwood home;
the police station; LAX, where the bad guys grab Craig Martin (Richard
Burgi); the Santa Monica pier; and, of course, the house in which
Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger) is imprisoned by the kidnappers.
The LAX sub-page includes an image of Richard's Craig Martin being led
away by Jason Statham's character, and the Brentwood sub-page plays Craig's
voicemail message warning Jessica to get out of the house.
Official Cellular website: http://www.cellularthemovie.com/
Richard completed principal photography on the action-oriented
thriller Cellular in late November '03, playing the supporting role
of
Craig Martin, husband of kidnap victim Jessica Martin (Kim
Basinger). Cellular was written by Larry Cohen and directed
by David Ellis. Filming on the Los Angeles-based feature ran from
September through November '03, with some additional filming done in early
'04.
Cellular stars Kim Basinger as Jessica Martin, with Richard Burgi
as Craig Martin, Chris Evans as Ryan Hewitt, William H. Macy as Bob Mooney,
Jason Statham, and Jessica Biel as Chloe. The Cellular page at the
Internet Movie Database -- http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0337921/
-- gives the following summary:
"A young man (Evans) receives a call on his cellular phone from a
woman (Basinger) who says she's been kidnapped, and thinks she's going
to be killed soon, along with her husband and son who the kidnappers have
gone after next. The catch? She doesn't know where she is... and his cell
phone battery might go dead soon."
E! Online conducted interviews with actors William H. Macy and Chris
Evans on the Cellular set, which are available as a trailer of sorts at
the moviebox website, along with a small selection of publicity photos.

[18 Sep 04] *** Sci Fi Channel
announces Darklight premiere date *** -- Darklight will premiere Saturday,
September 18th at 9:00pm ET/PT with an encore at 1:00am ET/PT that
same night. An additional airing is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23rd
at 9:00pm ET/PT.
Richard headed off to Sofia, Bulgaria in late July '03
to join the cast of UFO Films' Darklight, a Sci Fi Channel Original
Production for the 2004-05 broadcast season. Richard plays William
Shaw and is joined by Shiri Appleby ("Roswell's" Liz) as Lilith.
"Star Trek's" John de Lancie and "Stargate: Atlantis"' David
Hewlett also star in Darklight. Principal photography began on July
28th and wrapped the week of August 18th.
The Sci Fi Channel's current listing for Darklight gives this description:
"A secret society fights evil with evil in this atmospheric original
thriller.
Shiri Appleby (TV's Roswell), Richard Burgi (The Sentinel, SCI FI
Pictures' Decoys), John de Lancie (Q from the Star Trek franchise) and
David Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis, SCi FI Pictures' Boa vs. Python, the
indie hit Cube) star in this tale of an ancient demoness named Lilith,
who has been captured by a secret society known as The Faith.
Her true nature concealed by a powerful spell, Lilith lives as a
24-year-old woman with no memory of her ageless past -- until William Shaw
(Burgi) of The Faith recruits her to help him stop the Demonicos, a rampaging
monster that is spreading a lethal plague across the Earth and whose only
vulnerability is to Lilith's unique mystical power, known as Darklight.
As the duo race to slay the creature, they unwittingly expose a treacherous
conspiracy within The Faith itself. Lilith has the power to set things
right -- but now she has been reawakened to her true nature, will she resume
her own evil ways? Trusting her is a life-or-death gamble for humanity,
but it's one that William Shaw has no choice but to take."
According to the Sofia Sideshow,
which chronicles the film production experience in Bulgaria, "Richard Burgi
and Shiri Appleby were both a mass of good clean fun."

[18 Sep 04] *** Lifetime TV announces
broadcast dates for Torn Apart *** -- Richard joined Tia
Carrere and
Dale Midkiff in New Orleans in May to work on Torn
Apart, a new thriller from Wallet Size Pictures.
Torn Apart is currently scheduled to premiere on Lifetime
TV at 9:00pm ET/PT on Monday, September 27th, with an encore
at 9:00pm Thursday, Sept 30th.
The film was written and directed by Stuart Alexander and produced
by Mark Bacino, Jim Green, and Albert J. Salzer. Richard
plays Billy Westin, the husband of Carrere's
Vicki Westin.
Dale Midkiff plays Jerry Bender.
The Lifetime
TV website gives the following description of Torn Apart:
"A doctor's [Carrere] life is turned upside down when the father
[Midkiff] of a patient she couldn't save kidnaps her husband [Burgi] and
daughter. The kidnapper forces her to choose which of the two hostages
he should spare. Starring: Tia Carrere, Dale Midkiff, Richard Burgi, Zoe

[18 Sep 04] *** Richard guests
on new ABC drama, "Desperate Housewives" -- series premiere Sunday, October
3rd at 9:00pm ET/PT*** -- Richard will appear in the October 17th
episode, "Pretty Little Picture," playing the ex-husband of Teri
Hatcher's character, Susan Mayer. The role could become
a recurring character. Richard was working on "Desperate Housewives" during
the week of August 2nd.
Interestingly, one of Richard's scenes with Teri Hatcher has been used
in ABC promo spots advertising the new series. Mr. Mayer appears to have
visited his ex and caught her in the shower (or spent the night for an
ill-advised dalliance) and departed in a hurry, Susan trailing behind him
wearing nothing but a towel. Naturally, the towel gets caught in the car
door as Mayer departs, leaving poor Susan scrambling about like Eve in
search of a few fig leaves.
The Futon Critic website gave
this description of the show:
"A primetime soap with a truly contemporary take on 'happily ever
after,' 'Desperate Housewives' takes a darkly comedic look at suburbia,
where the secret lives of housewives aren't always what they seem.
Looking down on her friends and family isn't a way of life for Mary
Alice Young... it's a way of death. One day, in her perfect house, in the
loveliest of suburbs, Mary Alice ended it all. Now she's taking us into
the lives of her family, friends and neighbors, commenting from her elevated
P.O.V."
To learn more about the show, visit the "Desperate
Housewives" page at the ABC website.

[18 Sep 04] *** Richard to join Sentinel
costar and friend Garett Maggart at "Lights, Camera, Auction, Take 7" charity
auction *** -- Richard has been added to the list of celebrities slated
to attend this year's Lights, Camera, Auction event, which will be held
at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel LAX in Los Angeles October 22-24
2004.
Staged by the non-profit Motion Picture Industry Charitable Alliance,
the LCA event is the seventh annual charity auction and the first to be
held in Los Angeles. (Previous LCA events were held in Canada). The MPICA
website has this to say of the organization:
"The Motion Picture Industry Charitable Alliance is an entertainment
industry-based non-profit organization that hosts charity auctions featuring
items donated by studios, theatres, actors, directors, producers and crew
members of popular movies, television series and stage productions. At
these auctions, the fans of the shows are given the opportunity to collect
special memorabilia while simultaneously generating funds for noteworthy
causes. The selected charities benefit from both the generosity of the
donations and from the enthusiasm and support of the fans. Each yearly
event benefits one US and one Canadian charity, with different charities
selected for each event."
Lights, Camera, Auction - Take 7 will benefit the Canuck
Place Children's Hospice in Canada and Hollygrove
Children and Family Services in Hollywood, California.
For information on attending the LCA event, visit the LCA 7 page at
the MPICA website: http://www.mpica.org/LCA7/main.htm

[18 Sep 04] *** The Official RBFC
charity, the Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center (FSLMMC), has
chosen a new name -- the Pacific Marine Mammal Center *** --
A recent letter from the MMC (excerpted below) details the name change:
"With the expansion of our responsibilities to include cetacean rehabilitation,
as well as the expansion of our education programs to include a broader
curriculum, we have made the decision to take a leap and give ourselves
a name that more fully reflects what we do -- Pacific
Marine Mammal Center.
We are excited about the new name, as it is more reflective of our
work with all marine mammals, as well as of the ever-expanding scope of
environmental education programs we offer. We have big plans for the next
couple of years including a renovation of our upstairs education area and
the reconstruction of our outdoor pools and pens to accommodate our steadily
growing patient load and improve the water quality for the animals.
We are very proud of our history, founders, board members, staff,
and volunteers, included. Who would have thought that the rescue of that
first tiny harbor seal pup 33 years ago would have such an impact on the
lives of the thousands of marine mammals that we have given a second chance
at life? We are so grateful to those of you who are long-time donors and
to those of you who are new friends. It is your support that has allowed
us to build our solid foundation and to provide our quality animal care
and education programs over the years. You can be assured that the core
values and vision of our organization will always remain the same."
**RBFC News** -- A recent visit to the PMMC revealed that the
RBFC had joined the ranks of supporters whose names appear on a handsome
plaque outside the Center's gift shop. Our heartfelt thanks to all of
you who've joined us in supporting the PMMC in Richard's honor!

[18 Sep 04] *** Richard Burgi and
Garett Maggart a hit at July 24th fundraiser at the Moonridge Zoo ***
-- Richard and Garett charmed and delighted those who attended the
Moonridge Zoo's fourth annual Alpine Wildlife Celebration, which
took place at the Zoo in Big Bear, California. The event started at 10:00am
and ran into the early evening, with Richard wrapping up the fundraising
events with an auction of items from his own stock of memorabilia -- caps
he wore in "The Sentinel," (one seen in photo at top left) as well
as a script from Cellular, sides and a call sheet from Starship
Troopers 2, a wrap-party tee shirt from "Point Pleasant," and
several other items.
Richard arrived with his family at around 10:25am and was joined shortly
thereafter by Garett. Both spent the day taking part in the Zoo's events,
presenting several of the animals in the Animal Adoption Auction as well
as signing autographs and posing with fans for photos. Both were unfailingly
charming, friendly, and generous of time and spirit, leaving visitors and
Moonridge staffers delighted and impressed.
The event was an unqualified success for Moonridge, with over $17,000
raised by the Friends of Garett Maggart, a group of fans who organized
and ran a private auction several weeks in advance of the Wildlife Celebration.
That amount was further bolstered by donations made at the Zoo during the
Celebration, most notably during the Animal Adoption Auction and the Live
Auction Emcee'd by Richard (the two caps alone raised $1,250 for the Zoo).
Guests and attendees alike greatly enjoyed themselves at the Celebration,
and it is likely that Richard will attend next year's event, schedule and
prior commitments permitting.
For more information, contact Betsy Henke at (909) 584-9510 or email
her at betsy17@charter.net or visit the Moonridge website at http://www.moonridgezoo.org/

[18 Sep 04]*** US-market Decoys DVD joins
roster at Amazon.com website; Canadian market version now available at
Amazon.ca *** -- Burgi fans interested in owning a DVD of Decoys
can order the US-market, Region 1-encoded disc through Amazon.com or order
the Canadian version (also Region 1, which was released on July 20th) through
Amazon's Canadian subsidiary, Amazon.ca. (Amazon.com account holders
can use their accounts at the amazon.ca site). The US-market DVD
is listed with a September 7th release date and a price of $17.47.
NOTE! Only the Canadian version, available
through Amazon.ca, contains the bloopers and deleted scenes! (Look for
the DVD cover with the large photo of reptilian-eyed Lilly, and the July
24th release date).
The ordering specifics and DVD details for each version can be found
at the relevant websites -- www.amazon.ca
for the Canadian release, and www.amazon.com
for the US version.
European (Region 2) viewers can pre-order the Decoys DVD from
the UK's
www.play.com website, which lists an October 4th release date.
The SciFi Channel's broadcast of Decoys made the "What to Watch"
listing in the June 25/July 2 issue of Entertainment Weekly, earning
a C grade and the following review:
"Everyone always talks about how hot college chicks are, but what
about the ones working the other side of the thermometer? You know, the
ones from outer space. The ones who seduce young human males before freezing
them from the inside out during sex. What about them?!? Well, they finally
get their due in this goofy horror flick. Mild-mannered college student
Luke (North Shore's Corey Sevier) meets two cool babes in the laundry room,
but realizes something is amiss when he finds a Yanni CD in their room.
His suspicions are confirmed when tentacles burst out of their chests.
You may be the one who dies laughing."
Writer and director Matt Hastings is reported to be working on
a sequel or sequels to Decoys. Such sequels would supposedly follow the
men who successfully mated with the outer space sirens and gave birth to
their own little bundles of tentacled joy. (Which would explain why poor
Detective Kirk was constantly clearing his throat and pulling at his collar
at the end of Decoys...)

[18 Sep 04] *** Welcome aboard, Captain
Vincent Hunter *** -- With CBS having dropped "The District"
from the Fall 2004 schedule, the USA Network has picked the show
up for syndicated broadcast starting in September. USA will begin with
a "District" marathon on Sept. 13th (7:00am - 7:00pm ET/PT) to introduce
the show after which it will air weekdays (Mon-Fri) at 11:00am, 12:00noon,
and 6:00pm ET/PT, with an additional airing at midnight on Saturdays.
Richard's episodes airing in September are:
- Sep 20 -- 12:00pm -- "Surveillance"
- Sep 23 -- 6:00pm -- "In God We Trust"
- Sep 24 -- 11:00am -- "In God We Trust"
- Sep 28 -- 12:30am -- "The Santa Wars"
- Sep 30 -- 12:00pm -- "the D.C. Strangler"
Richard appeared in three of the show's four seasons in a total
of twelve episodes, playing the recurring role of the prickly and suspicious
Captain
Vincent Hunter, head of the DC Police Department's Internal Affairs
Division.
Unfortunately, the show did not take maximum advantage of the Hunter
character, though they established an intriguing back-story for him in
the first season episode "The DC Strangler." Ella Farmer (played by
the late Lynn Thigpen) told Chief Mannion (Craig T. Nelson)
a bit about Hunter. He was a highly-decorated officer with a relatively
high solve rate while in Homicide, a department he left after discovering
his wife -- also a police officer -- in bed with his partner..
A complete listing of Richard's episodes of "The District" can
be found on the Biography page, with
an expanded listing and episode details on the District
Guide page.

[18 Sep 04]*** Fox 2000's In Her Shoes
now in post-production, aiming for early 2005 release *** -- With the
remaining location scenes wrapped in Philadelphia, PA and South Florida,
In
Her Shoes has finished principal photography and is now in the post-production
phase. Early reports have mentioned January 2005 as a possible premiere
date for the film.
In Her Shoes stars
Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley
MacLaine. Richard joined the cast in February and "wrapped out" in
mid April with some location scenes in Philadelphia. Richard plays
Jim
Danvers, one of Rose's (Collette) love interests. According to
the character breakdown, Danvers is "a handsome, suave attorney at the
law firm of Lewis, Dommel and Fenick. He's also a cold-hearted ladies man
who dumps women without thinking twice."
Based on the Jennifer Weiner book of the same title, In Her Shoes
was screenwritten by Susannah Grant and is directed by Curtis
Hanson. Rebecca Klein, writing for The
Action Insider, gives this brief description of the film's premise:
"This feature film from Fox 2000 will star Cameron Diaz as Maggie
Feller, a free-spirited but immature party girl who dreams of stardom.
She moves in with her career-oriented older sister Rose after getting evicted
from her own apartment.
Sibling rivalry follows when Rose kicks Maggie out after she trashes
the apartment and sleeps with Rose's boyfriend."
Shirley MacLaine plays Ella Hirsch, Maggie and Rose's grandmother.
Mark
Feuerstein plays Simon Stein, another love interest for Rose, while
Ken
Howard plays Michael Feller, Rose and Maggie's father.

[18 Sep 04] *** Starship Troopers 2
DVD now available in various regions *** -- Starship Troopers 2
DVDs are now available for purchase in most markets (see list below).
Region 1 (USA & Canada) -- June 1st
Region 2 (Europe, Middle East & Japan) -- May
- Netherlands -- May 3rd
- United Kingdom -- May 10th
- Poland -- June 29th
Region 4 (Australia) -- May 19th
At far left, in the image at left, can be seen the original DVD cover
artwork, with the updated cover art beside it. The "special edition" design
is the version that graced the Region 1 DVDs when they were released in
early June.
Trivia note: With more scenes remaining that studio time allowed,
the producers decided to get a least one critical scene "in the can" by
producing it in CGI (think of Gollum in "Lord of The Rings.") The shot
of Dax armed with a pair of Morita rifles, backlit by the transport ship's
engines, was generated entirely in the Tippett Studio computers. (Richard
spent some time working at the Tippett Studio in Berkeley, CA, where the
digital filming, motion capture, and careful facial scanning necessary
for the incredible degree of realism was done).
The final image is from the "making of" featurette included in
the Starship Troopers 2 DVD, which includes interviews with Richard and
his castmates, as well as behind the scenes footage.
* NOTE: The Region 1 DVD is available for order at Amazon.com!
Amazon's price is $17.47, a 30% discount off the list price of $24.96.
The film has been given an
R rating by the MPAA.

[18 Aug 04] ** Starship Troopers 2 articles, print and online **
-- With the film's release on DVD well underway, and its Cable premiere
on the Encore Action Channel several months behind us, most of the expected
magazine articles have been published and mentioned in our listings. With
the exception of Cinescape, the roll call of North American scifi genre
publications is essentially complete.
Our listing of Troopers 2 articles, with images and highlights, can
be found in both previous News pages and in our Troopers 2 guide. Any new
articles will, of course, be highlighted here on the News page.

2 guide page to see previous News items.

Richard worked from May 14th through
June 20th on the long-awaited
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation,
filming at Manhattan Beach Studios and on location in the Santa Clarita
"canyon country" north of Los Angeles. He also made several follow-up visits
to the Berkeley, California headquarters of Tippett Studio for additional
post-production work during the final quarter of 2003. Richard plays Captain
V.J. Dax, the hero mentioned in the film's title.
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation is produced by Jon
Davison, with Phil Tippett directing. Tippett shot from a screenplay
by Ed Neumeier, who also wrote the screenplay for the original Starship
Troopers film. (All three worked on the first Starship Troopers, which
was directed by Paul Verhoeven. Tippett's Tippett Studio produced
the visual special effects for the first film, and is once again providing
special effects for ST2).
When we -- and the besieged troopers -- first meet Captain Dax,
he is the last man at an otherwise abandoned and desolate outpost on planet
Zulu Angel. Disgraced and imprisoned in the outpost's incinerator for killing
his commanding officer, he is somewhat the worse for wear -- dirty, torn,
unshaven, and more than a little war-weary. When the rapacious arachnids
threaten to once again overrun the makeshift defenses of the old outpost,
Dax is called upon to rally the rag-tag band of Troopers to fend off the
marauding Bugs. Unfortunately for Dax and the Troopers, the arachnids have
other things in mind for the unsuspecting humans...

[18 Sep 04] *** Write to Richard care of
the RBFC! *** -- Richard has asked us to encourage anyone interested in
sending cards or letters to him to use the RBFC mailing address, which
is listed below. This allows Richard to better handle
his incoming mail, which he certainly enjoys receiving, provided it comes
through appropriate channels.
Mr. Richard Burgi
RBFC
10153 1/2 Riverside Drive, #494
Toluca Lake, CA 91602
USA
We cannot emphasize strongly enough that mail should not be
sent to Richard's home address! Receiving fan mail through his
home address is a disquieting experience and cause for concern, especially
from the standpoint of privacy and safety. If you have come across
what you believe may be his home address, please, do NOT use it! We
-- and Richard -- would greatly appreciate it if you would let us
know where you came across the address by using this e-mail
link to the RBFC.
While postcards, letters, and cards will be promptly forwarded
to Richard, we cannot forward packages; he has asked that no gifts
be sent to him. Though Richard appreciates the goodwill and generosity
those gifts represent, he finds them a little overwhelming. Richard
would be honored if, instead, wellwishers made a donation in his name to
a local children's shelter or literacy program, or to the Pacific
Marine Mammal Center .
