Wheelmen, a raucous limousine company comedy starring Richard Burgi, Michael Fairman, James Avery and Jason Kravits completed production in Los Angeles during a 19 day shoot and will be screened for distributors on August 22, 2002 at the Arclight Theaters Complex (6360 Sunset Blvd.). The film, directed by Dirk Hagen and produced by John Orland, is a Stretchpix, LLC production, Co-Produced by Lexi Alexander and Robert J. Ulrich , line producer on the production was Gary A. Lowe, production design by Robert E. Hummel, casting by Robert J. Ulrich, costume design by Emmy Taylor and Director of Photography, Don E. FauntLeRoy, A.S.C. and Editor Sherril Schlesinger.

NICK TORINO (Richard Burgi, Fox's "24" and CBS' "The District"), a former ambulance driver, is the acting patron of floundering Los Angeles limousine service, Venture Limousine. In his care are five other 'wheelmen': PAUL (Michael Fairman, "Dharma and Greg" and "The Practice"), a distinguished gentleman and twenty year vet of the limo world, VLADIMIR (Elya Baskin , Air Force One and Moscow On The Hudson), a Russian ex-bodyguard who's traded in his two pack a day cigarette habit for the strange icy goodness of Slurpees. KRISTEN (Lisa Arturo, American Pie II), a 'just one of the guys' sexy woman. RALPH (Adam Biesk, Flight of the Intruder and Meet The Applegates), a potted plant with a Class C license and ANDY COOPER (Greg Lee, "Xena Warrior Princess" and "Dark Angel"), a likeable, happy-go-lucky twenty something who lives every night like a Saturday night, waiting for "The Great Benefactor." Andy is convinced that BERNARD "BARNY" ALBERT TOMLINSON (Rainn Wilson , Almost Famous and Galaxy Quest) is "The Great Benefactor," until it is revealed that he is a paranoid Ex-Secret Service agent attempting to prevent a bizarre kidnapping attempt of the Vice President (James Avery, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"). Venture Limousine wheelmen have been assigned to the Vice President's motorcade unaware that they will become part of the plot to kidnap him.

As if putting up with his colleagues wasn't enough, Nick comes to work one day and discovers a little boy from his past named ARTHUR (Alexander Gould, Finding Nemo) waiting patiently for him in his office. After noticing several bruises on Arthur's neck, Nick drops the boy off at Social Services where he meets GWEN (Erin Daniels, One Hour Photo), a loving social worker assigned to Arthur's case. Things get complicated as Nick falls for Gwen, and little Arthur feels the rush of jealousy as he too has a crush on her.

[05 Mar 03]  *** Keep an eye out for Richard when CBS repeats "The Second Man" this Saturday, March 8th at 9:00pm ET/PT*** Next up will be "Good-bye, Jenny" -- The District airs at 9:00pm ET/PT Saturdays on CBS. Richard returned to The District in December 2002, once again playing Captain Vincent Hunter in "The Second Man."
Richard as Captain Hunter in The Second Man
According to the TV Guide online listing for the episode:

"During a struggle, deputy chief Noland shoots a college student he believes is about to rob a convenience store with a gun, but the ensuing investigation doesn't turn up a weapon. Soon, Internal Affairs demands that Noland be suspended, but Mannion refuses to take his badge. Also, the student's wealthy parents threaten to bring charges against Noland."

Richard's most recent episode of The District aired initially on Saturday, January 18th. Titled "Good-bye, Jenny," it is his ninth episode so far of the hit CBS drama. The TV Guide online description (available at http://www/tvguide.com ) reads as follows:

Richard's Captain Hunter bedevils Nancy Parras and Temple Page
"A half-million dollars worth of cocaine, which is key evidence in a murder, disappears from the evidence warehouse after Nancy turns it in; Mannion comforts a friend (Lanai Chapman) who is dying of AIDS; and Ella saves a man's life after a near-fatal fall, but he then sues her, claiming her efforts led to his paralysis. Also: Temple doesn't know what to do when an aggressive woman in the gun lab comes on to him."

Richard's Captain Vincent Hunter becomes involved when it becomes evident that the evidence tampering was an inside job. As Officer Nancy Parras (Elizabeth Marvel) was the last person on record to have handled the cocaine, she becomes Hunter's initial focus.

In the "small, small world" category, one of Richard's "Johnny on the Spot" costars -- Helen Cates -- also appears in this episode of The District, playing ballistics expert Carol Bodine.

No word so far as to whether Richard will be in any additional 2002-03 season episodes of The District.

** French fans, look for Richard every Sunday at 3:30pm on Channel 2 ** The District recently joined the lineup on France's Channel 2, where it is known as "Washington Police."

[05 Mar 03] *** First season of 24 launches in Switzerland on French-language Television Suisse Romande -- Thursdays, starting on March 6th. ***  According to TV8, the TV guide for French-speaking Switzerland, the first season of 24 will launch this Thursday in its first European non-pay TV broadcast. TV8 interviewed Richard for an article announcing the launch.

Richard Burgi as Alan York/Kevin Carroll in 24

"I adored breaking my image!" - Richard Burgi

Richard in Swiss TV Guide articleHaving the looks of a poster boy for seduction and charm, Richard Burgi could easily have remained his whole life in soap operas like Days of our Lives, where he played the character of Phillip Collier. That would be misjudging the this actor who likes to play with his image. That's why, after being Detective James Ellison, the well known hero fighting for justice in The Sentinel, he has played various parts in sitcoms like Seinfeld, Veronica's Closet or in a hilarious episode of Just Shoot Me, recently seen on TSR [the Swiss French-speaking channel - ed].  In 24 Hours Chrono, he surprises us by playing yet another type of chaacter, the mysterious Alan York.

What did particularly interest you in this role?
Before 24 Hours, I always played the "good guy." With this many-faced character, I enjoyed breaking the image people might have had of me.

In the first episode of the series, all we know about Alan York, is that he is worried about his daughter. Can you really not tell us a little bit more about him?
I could tell you what happens next, but then I would have to kill you! Those are the orders of the production to keep up the suspense.

Is that really important?
It's this amazing suspense that makes the success of the series. Up to the point that people like Spielberg asked for a video at the studio when they had unfortunately missed an episode. All the people I know are dependant; even my wife, who is rather an intellectual, that says everything...

After three seasons, the series The Sentinel was suddenly stopped. Why?
There had been a problem between the new direction of the network that was broadcasting the series and the producers. The Sentinel didn't survive it. I'm sorry about that, but that chapter is definitely closed.

Back in 1977, you spent six months in Switzerland, for your pleasure?
I lived in Lugano and traveled all over your country. My grandfather was Swiss and I have family in Lucerne and Winterthour; it was kind of going back to the roots.

***
TV vets making feature film in Ottawa

Tony Lofaro
The Ottawa Citizen

Thursday, February 27, 2003

A former Baywatch star and a soap opera actor are joining the cast of a big-budgeted sci-fi thriller that begins filming Tuesday in Ottawa.

Nicole Eggert, who played Summer Quinn for two years on Baywatch, and Joe Lando, a series regular on One Life to Live who more recently played on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, are appearing in Decoys, a $5-million feature film that will be shooting at various locations in the city.

It's the second movie in six months that is being filmed in Ottawa after last year's drama Outrage, which starred Alexandra Paul, also a former Baywatch regular.

Decoys is expected to hit theatres this fall.

Director Matt Hastings describes the film as "American Pie meets Species," although it will also have a "sci-fi bent" to it and some humour. It's the story of two beautiful female aliens who come to earth and begin a series of strange events at a college campus during a very cold winter.

Snow is an important element in the film -- the aliens are from an ice planet and need cold weather to survive -- and the recent big snowfall has been a boon for the production, he said.

"I'd say almost half the movie will be shot outside," said Mr. Hastings, who's been in Ottawa for a month scouting locations.

"Not a lot of the features have been shot here, and there's so many beautiful locations in the city that we will be tapping into."

The University of Ottawa, St. Paul University, the Father and Sons restaurant on Osgoode Street, other locations in Sandy Hill and the Lees Avenue campus of Algonquin College are slated for use.

Ottawa actress Krista Morin has one of the principal roles in the film, playing the part of Vikki Vickers, the head sorority sister at the college. She said the sudden arrival of these film productions is a good sign for Ottawa actors who have had to go elsewhere for film auditions.

"Ottawa is more of a theatre-based town, so this is pretty exciting. Before, we used to go to Montreal for auditions and shoot
there. But the fact that they're coming here to us is great," said Ms. Morin, 23, who appeared in the movie Confessions of a
Dangerous Mind.

[15 Feb 03] *** Richard films new pilot for the WB network *** -- Richard has a part in the new Chris Thompson-produced comedy Trash, a pilot for the WB network's Fall 2003 season, playing Bud Blue, father of a teenage daughter named Luna. The pilot episode filmed in late January as scheduled.

Trash is set in Antelope Valley, a community north of the Los Angeles metro area. Mac (Mike Erwin), 16 1/2, and his mother Lisa (Lisa Blount) move from Los Angeles to her home town, taking up residence in a trailer park. Mac's best friend is Gypsy (Samaire Armstrong), also 16. Gypsy's brother is considered the town bad boy. Naturally, they all live in the trailer park.

Mac gets a job mowing the lawn of the more well-to-do Blues and promptly falls for the lovely Luna (Pippi). Bud, it just so happens, has history with Mac's mother; he stood her up at the prom and ran off with -- and married -- some rich girl from the good side of town. Luna's mother -- and Mac's father -- are no longer in the picture. Naturally, Bud is less than thrilled to discover Mac's interest in his daughter and tries to warn him off.

The series is described by E! Entertainment TV's Kimberly Potts (TV Scoop) as "Romeo and Juliet set in a trailer park," and further described by Potts as "the early contender for what could either be the funniest new sitcom of next season or the worst, most offensive new sitcom of next season."

According to an article in the Hollywood Reporter, Trash "has been in development at the WB Network for two years" and is now going ahead to the pilot stage as a Regency Television and Sony Pictures Television production. Trash has been "described as a Coen brothers-style take on the 'Romeo and Juliet' tale," adds the Reporter.

Firefly cast promo photos [05 Mar 03] *** Richard's episode of canceled FOX series Firefly confirmed *** After conferring with Richard, and researching with the folks at www.fireflyfans.net, we have been able to identify Richard's episode of the Western-flavored science fiction series from Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Richard's episode is "The Message," presumed production number 1AGE13. Written by executive producers Joss Whedon and Tim Minear, and filmed in mid-December, "The Message" was one of the last episodes ordered by FOX. According to a brief description of the episode, "the crew must deliver the corpse of an old war comrade home, but things are not as they seem."
Richard's character -- presumably the "old war comrade" -- was potentially a recurring role.

Though the full batch of episodes ordered by FOX was produced, the show was declared on hiatus before all episodes could be aired. The as yet unaired episodes are "Heart of Gold," "Trash," and "The Message." FOX has announced it intends to air all remaining episodes of Firefly.

For more information on Firefly and the ongoing campaign to get it back on the air, visit the FireflyFans website at http://www.fireflyfans.net

[08 Jan 03]  *** Richard's Michael Cassidy returned to bedevil his ex, Judge Amy Gray, in "The Best Interests of the Child" -- Tuesday, January 21st at 10:00pm ET/PT on CBS ***
Richard as Michael Cassidy in The Best Interests of the Child
Richard's latest episode of Judging Amy, titled "The Best Interests of the Child," brought the custody dispute between Amy Gray and her ex-husband, Michael Cassidy to its inevitable climax. The TV Guide online listing has this to say:

"Amy (Amy Brenneman) is prepared for the worst as the bitter battle for custody of Lauren (Karle Warren) finally nears an end.

Among the first to testify at the hearing is Lauren's father, Michael (Richard Burgi), who serves his own self-interests by effectively arguing that his ex has demonstrated a lack of parenting skills in the past year. To improve her client's chances of winning, Amy's lawyer (Caroline McWilliams) advises putting the 10-year-old on the stand to say she wants to live with her mother -- an idea Amy adamantly opposes. Meanwhile, Maxine continues to rationalize that keeping her distance from Eric before her former charge stands trial for murder is in his best interest."

This most recent episode is Richard's fifth so far of the popular CBS drama. His previous episode of Judging Amy, titled "People of the Lie," took Michael and Amy (Amy Brenneman) further down the road towards a messy custody battle for their daughter Lauren (Karle Warren). Interestingly, another of Richard's "Johnny on the Spot" costars also appeared in this episode -- Miriam Flynn played the part of Amy's new interior decorator, "Winky."

Richard officially returned to Judging Amy  as Michael Cassidy in the Fall 2002 season premiere, "Lost in the System," which aired on October 1st. The TV Guide description is excerpted below:

"The drama's fourth season picks up where it left off last spring, with Judge Amy Gray (Amy Brenneman) in the middle of a messy custody battle. Amy is hot under the collar about having to attend mediation sessions with her ex-husband, Michael (Richard Burgi), to whom she is unwilling to surrender their daughter, Lauren."
Richard as Michael Cassidy in Judging Amy
According to the August 27, 2002 issue of Soap Opera Weekly (pg.13), Richard's character, Michael, is to figure prominently in the Fall 2002 season. "Amy's ex, Michael, who is not pleased with Amy's new living arrangements, follows through on his threats to fight for custody of their daughter, Lauren. 'The custody battle between them is going to be an ongoing thing this season,' reveals [head writer Barbara] Hall."

To learn more about Judging Amy, visit the show's homepage at the CBS website: http://www.cbs.com/primetime/judging_amy/

Don't forget to use the CBS site's feedback option to tell them how much you enjoyed seeing Richard on Judging Amy, and how much you look forward to seeing more of him in the role of Michael Cassidy this season!

Richard's episodes so far:

  • "The Justice League of America" (episode 3.18) aired 26 Mar 02
  • "Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition" (episode 3.23) aired 14 May 02
  • "Lost in the System" (episode 4.01) aired 01 Oct 02
  • "People of the Lie" (episode 4.10) aired 10 Dec 02
  • "The Best Interests of the Child" (episode 4.13) aired 21 Jan 03
Richard's first appearance in the popular CBS series was in the episode "The Justice League of America," (26 Mar 02) which reintroduced viewers to Michael Cassidy. (The role has been played in previous seasons by John Slattery, who was apparently unavailable due to his current commitment to the series "Ed"). Filmed in early April, the May 14th episode brought Richard's recurring Judging Amy appearances to two, with additional appearances as Judge Amy (Amy Brenneman) Gray's ex-husband Michael Cassidy likely in the Fall 2002 season.

Judging Amy is currently airing on Tuesday nights at 10:00pm ET/PT.

According to the CBS website,  "'Judging Amy' is a drama starring Amy Brenneman ('NYPD Blue') as a single mother who has left New York behind and become a family court judge in Hartford, Connecticut. Recently divorced and raising her young daughter Lauren (Karle Warren), Judge Amy Gray has moved in with her very opinionated mother, Maxine (Tyne Daly) ; re-established a friendship with her free-spirited brother, Vincent (Dan Futterman); her older brother, Peter (Marcus Giamatti), and his wife, Gillian (Jessica Tuck), and is continuing to make her fresh start work. Assisting Amy in the courtroom are her court services officer, Bruce Van Exel (Richard T. Jones) and her overeager court clerk, Donna Kozlowski-Pant (Jillian Armenante). 'Judging Amy,' based on the real-life story of Brenneman's mother, is about three generations of women living together as they confront the personal and professional dilemmas in their changing challenging lives."
