RBFC charitable activities -- an overview The organized charitable activities of the RBFC have generally remained confined to online auctions and raffles, with the proceeds of both supplemented with cash donations if Members desire to contribute in that fashion. With the exception of our very first charity auction, which benefited the National Audubon Society, we have looked to our Honoree, Richard Burgi, for guidance on appropriate beneficiaries. After conferring with him, we supported the Orange County Bird of Prey Center for a time before making a more long-term choice of beneficiary -- the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, formerly known as the Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center. Richard is interested in a variety of charitable organizations, especially
those which work to both protect and build an awareness of our environment
-- the planet we live on, and the creatures sharing it with us; he has
supported the work of the Yellowstone Ecological Survey and the
San Clemente-based Surfrider Foundation, and has been happy to take
part in the events benefiting the Moonridge Animal Park. He has
also expressed an abiding interest in children's welfare and literacy programs,
and in supporting national radio.
RBFC charitable activities -- a chronological listing of events The RBFC's first official event benefitting the National Audubon Society was an auction featuring Sentinel memorabilia in the form of cast photos and Sentinel scripts, most of which were autographed by Richard Burgi and his co-stars Garett Maggart and Bruce A.Young. Held in late March 1999, the charity auction raised over $6,000 for the NAS.
In honor of Richard's birthday (July 30th 1999), the members of the RBFC sent donations to the National Audubon Society in Richard's name in lieu of birthday gifts. The donations totaled in excess of $6,000.
With the advent of the year 2000, the RBFC has chosen to support a new charity, one Richard Burgi finds especially deserving -- the Orange County Bird of Prey Center (OCBPC). Future auctions and fund-raising activities will be held in aid of the OCBPC.
*** The Spring 2000 RBFC Charity Auction and Raffle *** -- The RBFC is pleased to sponsor an Online Charity Auction and a Charity Raffle to benefit the Orange County Bird of Prey Center (OCBPC). [04/23/00] The Online Charity Auction ran from April 6th - 9th 2000 and raised US$ 1972.00 for the OCBPC. To see the items which were on auction, please visit our Spring 2000 Charity Auction page. [04/30/00] The RBFC offered a fourth season Sentinel Press Kit in a raffle open to all Sentinel fans. Each raffle chance costs US$5, all of which will go to the OCBPC. The drawing was held on Sunday, April 30th. The raffle raised a total of $1,240 for the OCBPC. For more detailed information on the raffle, please visit the Spring 2000Charity Raffle page. Special thanks go to Richard and Lori Burgi, Garett Maggart, Bruce A. Young, Kathleen Cole, Darla Kershner, and Suzy Missirlian for all their help and generosity in donating and gathering together the items offered in the Charity Auction and Raffle. Quite literally, we would not be holding these fund-raisers without them.
*** The Fall 2001 RBFC Online Charity Auction *** -- Held from Wednesday, September 19th - Sunday, September 23rd, the Fall 2001 auction generated a combined total of US$ 4,577.00 in proceeds, all of which will go to the charity or charities chosen by Richard Burgi. To see the items which were on auction, please visit our Fall 2001 Charity Auction page. [09/25/01] The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 led us to reconsider the choice of auction beneficiary, with World Trade Center-related funds initially considered by Richard Burgi. After seeing the nationwide and international fundraising efforts for the New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania disaster relief funds, just one of which -- the internationally-televised "America: A Tribute to Heroes" benefit program -- raised over $300 million in pledges, Richard is concerned that many small, local, volunteer-run and funded charities will be overlooked. With that thought, he has asked us to use the proceeds of the auction
to support the Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center in Laguna
Beach, California.

Special thanks go to Richard and Lori Burgi (who donated the lion's
share of the items up for auction), Jen Raisler, and Kathleen Cole
for their invaluable help in donating and gathering the items offered.
Thanks also go to Kathleen Cole, Carla Coupe, and Bert Hayling for the
time and effort spent organizing and running the Fall 2001 RBFC Online
Charity Auction. Without their generosity, this fund-raiser would not have
taken place.
[12 Aug 02] *** RBFC Charity Raffle
in honor of Richard Burgi's birthday ***-- The RBFC Birthday Charity Raffle
is now closed. After a slow start, the Raffle gained considerable
ground with proceeds totaling
$1,105.00 by the July 15th cutoff
date. Though raffle entries had to be in by July 15th to qualify, donations
in honor of Richard's birthday were to be accepted through the end of July
for inclusion in the Raffle total. The final amount raised by the
raffle and related donations was $1153.80, which was turned over
to the Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center (FSLMMC)
in
Richard's
name.
The RBFC offered a replica of the "Four Point Shot" Cascade PD
basketball jersey (pictured above) and an 8x10 photo of Richard, both signed
by Richard Burgi, in a raffle open to all Sentinel and Burgi
fans. Raffle chances cost US$5 each.

This one of a kind piece of "Sentinel" memorabilia can be yours!
The RBFC Summer 2003 Charity Auction opened on Sunday, August
3rd and will run through mid-day Saturday, August 16th. Bidding
will be done via email, as has been the practice with previous RBFC auctions.
Further details on the Auction are available at the Summer
2003 Auction page. The FSLMMC mission statement (which is reproduced below) does not
fully convey the challenges facing the Center. It would be hard indeed
to overstress the constant need for long-term volunteers and for donations
of time, materiel, and money; one outbreak of domoic acid poisoning can
fill the Center to overflowing with sick marine mammals and devour resources
-- supplies, medicine, funds -- at an astounding rate.
We are pleased and proud to join Richard and Lori Burgi in their
support of this most worthy organization.
Friends of the Sea Lion Marine Mammal Center
As it is an ongoing concern of Richard's that many small, local,
volunteer-run and funded charities are overlooked, he is considering additional
charities to be supported by this auction. Should Richard choose
additional recipients for the proceeds of the Summer 2003 RBFC Auction,
we will announce them here and on the Auction page.
Special thanks go to Richard and Lori Burgi (who donated the lion's
share of the items up for auction), and to Kathleen Cole for her
invaluable help in donating and gathering the items offered. Thanks also
go to Kathleen Cole and Bert Hayling for the time and effort spent organizing
and running the Summer 2003 RBFC Online Charity Auction. Without their
generosity, this fund-raiser would not be taking place.
